darly abbey 1 darly abbey

Darley Abbey was a new area to me and so when I was invited to relax and unwind in the penthouse bridal suite at Birchover Residences, I was more than pleasantly surprised by both the location and the venue…

The booking process was efficient and our welcome on arrival extremely friendly.  We were shown to our suite on the top floor and first impressions were wow! The bridal suite is most definitely designed to a top specification with a shabby chic interior- just my cup of tea.

The lounge was very plush with a beautiful sofa and chair, white wooden furniture, blanket box and matching accessories- candles, lots of candles and romantic décor.

The kitchen –open plan, had plenty of cupboard space, a dishwasher, washing machine, microwave and all the kitchen ware you need to cook up a storm, along with a cosy dining table for two.

The bedroom again matched the vintage theme, all white with an amazingly comfortable bed- so comfy in fact I ordered the very same mattress when I returned home!

Again the bedroom furniture matched in white wood, a beautiful dresser and stool, heavy drapes and lots of wardrobe space.

The bathroom was a very good size, with a shower over the bath, more matching white wood furniture, Elemis soap & lotion (I notice these things) and…a sauna!  Yes a full sized sauna sat gloriously in our bathroom and boy was I going to take full advantage of that one.

The attention to detail is really something that stays in my mind- a hamper laid waiting for us on the coffee table upon arrival, containing lots of delicious goodies- Borders biscuits, pretzels, organic crackers etc.. and another breakfast hamper sat in the kitchen with essentials such as organic cereals, tea and condiments.  In the fridge was milk, fresh orange juice (the kind you get from the milk man that always tastes so much better than supermarket brands) and a bottle of Prosecco!

I have to say I instantly relaxed as I sat on the plush sofa after a busy week at work and I kept on feeling relaxed the whole duration of our stay.  What helped was the quiet location – no traffic noise, no distractions, the fact we were pretty much in the country and out of the city for a few days was also a contributing factor to my wind down.

On the first night we decided we would enjoy the comforts of the suite and cook and eat in, so we visited the local supermarket- a Sainsbury’s only 5 minutes drive away and stocked up on yummy food, with view to finding a nice local restaurant for our dinner the following evening…

This never happened.  After asking our welcome host for advise we were delighted to receive a few restaurant options printed from the internet posted through our letter box the following morning and so made our minds up that we would probably opt for  Italian when the time came…

A day out into Ashbourne was on the agenda for the Saturday – approximately a half hour drive from the apartment and we took a trip up to the Izaak Walton Hotel and enjoyed a walk through the Dovedale Valley to the famous Stepping Stones- a beautiful picturesque place to visit and one I would highly recommend with a picnic- do take cash with you though, as we realised we were short and so sadly couldn’t buy a much needed icecream!

A nap was needed after all of that fresh air and so we headed back to the apartment to sleep it off and woke hungry- dinner, Italian?  Saturday night TV was calling and to be honest we were pooped and so decided to once again cook and stay in for food- crusty fresh bread and baked cider cheddar cheese fondue in front of Britain’s Got Talent was on the cards, followed by a stint in the sauna and a bubble bath- the sauna was pretty amazing- room for two and felt brand new- definitely a nice touch to the apartment.

We really did want to try out a few of the restaurants and tea rooms in the area, but we were torn as we really didn’t want to leave the lovely apartment and so we look forward to visiting again and seeing more of the area.

I can honestly say I haven’t slept as well as that in a long time, so I thank Birchover for not only that but for an incredibly luxurious and peaceful stay we could have easily stayed the week!

I can’t recommend Birchover Residences enough for their hospitality- the team are all fantastic and their attention to detail is second to none- THANK YOU.

Fiona Duncan, RSViP
