The Jewry Wall – A Real Roman Experience
A completely new discovery for me is The Jewry Wall, I did not know this even existed just forty-five minutes from where I live in Nottingham. Located in the heart of Leicester, it is pretty mind blowing to realise that this historic site is so local and what’s more has been brought back to life by through this fantastic immersive experience- the Real Roman experience…
This museum is a Leicester Museums and Galleries site and part of the Leicester Council, however this is no ordinary museum, because when I think of a museum, I think of a stuffy, slightly stale fragranced room of basically displayed artifacts- no interaction, limited fun.
Not this museum- The Jewry Wall Museum have gotten the balance just right between education and experience, providing an immersive and interactive journey through our local history, which proves entertaining for all ages and all ages I saw whilst there, from children enjoying the school summer holidays, to parents, grandparents and couples with no children (us)! All there to enjoy and learn.
We were given a warm welcome by the team and quickly noticed a café and gift shop (standard finale to any visitor experience) and generally my favourite part. We luckily managed to jump onto the next tour with no wait and so found ourselves sat in a large room, surrounded by an impressive multimedia exhibition which donned all four walls in both black and white and colour, which went on to tell the ancient story of Marcellus, a curious boy and his dog- I won’t offer a spoiler, so you will need to visit if you wish to know more.
We were then ushered down the stairs into the exhibit, where we had free time to explore and enjoy the many incredible findings, including roman accessories, mosaic flooring and kitchen ware to name but a few found in the ancient burial sites.
There were also some great interactive educational games for children (and adults alike) to get involved with, finishing with a wander outside to the remains of what lies a roman bath and of course the Jewry Wall itself.
It was incredible to casually wander around 2000 years of history displayed in a refreshingly modern way and the immersive, media addition was a real treat. I also enjoyed a little browse around the gift shop before leaving, where everything from roman themed stationary, games and books to candles, ornaments and even Christmas decorations can be purchased.
The Jewry Wall & Real Roman Experience is one for your list the next time you are in the East Midlands area- for all the family.
