Getting Sugared with Secret Sugar Club
As someone who has never experienced waxing before, sugaring was certainly a new one for me. I have always been old school and gone with the BIC razor or electric shaver option, however curiosity got the better of me and I’m so glad it did, as I got to meet the lovely Sophie from Secret Sugar Club…
Sugaring, while currently establishing itself as the modern trend in hair removal, has a storied history dating back to at least 1900 BC. This method, gaining popularity for its natural and gentle approach, found favour across ancient civilisations, from the courts of Persia and Mesopotamia to the banks of the Nile in Egypt, where it is reputed to have been a staple in Cleopatra’s beauty regimen. It is also 100% vegan and organic, uses a natural blend of biodegradable ingredients including glucose (from potatoes), fructose (from corn) and water, no harsh chemicals and no heat, so it is also eco- friendly with a positive environmental impact.
Sophie bases herself from a salon in both Bingham and Phenix Salons in Nottingham – the latter was the one I recently visited. The space has been decorated in calming soft pastel colours, with a rustic feel- both clean and inviting.
I was given a warm welcome and was asked to relax on the couch, where Sophie explained the procedure step by step as she worked on sugaring my legs!
The first thing I noticed was the sugar itself, which is heated and looked like honey with the consistency of well, hot sugar/caramel.  My legs were cleansed and powdered using a blend of tapioca starch and bentonite clay – This mix has anti-inflammatory properties, but more importantly, it’s talc-free due to the health concerns around talc. I was spritzed with a sweet smelling rose spray to help cool and the procedure itself, whilst smarted at first (given it was my first time), was bearable and I soon got used to it.
Sophie has perfected the art of chatting to distract, which I fully appreciated in some moments and made me feel at ease and comfortable throughout, as she lay and smoothed the warm sugar on different sections of my legs and then pulled it back with expert speed ripping out the hairs in the process- it sounds barbaric, however it was strangely satisfying.
During the treatment, I noticed a small shelf of products for sale from the range which included oils, creams, wipes and more which can be purchased from Sophie to help with home aftercare and upkeep.
Whilst there, I learnt that the sugar paste only binds to hair and dead skin cells, meaning less pain, less irritation, and a much lower risk of ingrown hairs and Sophie explained that I probably wouldn’t need to shave my legs for a couple of weeks, as it slows down the regrowth and she was right, in fact I didn’t see any regrowth for three weeks, which was amazing and even then it was just a few ‘wispy’s!’
If you are environmentally conscious, a lover of animals (vegan treatment) and are looking for a low maintenance, longer lasting hair removal option with a friendly therapist, then I highly recommend going to see Sophie at Secret Sugar Club.
